As the summer air heats up, the July fishing season does too! While sunsets and boat drinks stay steady this summer, the action in the water picks up pace. First up, Florida Spiny Lobster season kicks off with a Mini Season, allowing sports fishermen to get to the lobsters before the big commercial boats do. The mini season always falls on the last Wednesday and Thursday of July, this year it falls on July 28th and 29th, while the regular season begins August 6th. Be sure to mark your calendars for August 12th to 15th for Lobsterfest, the official launch party of Lobster Season. It starts with a Lobster Boil and ends with a Lobster Brunch, with plenty of fun in between. Be sure to book ahead as space is limited.
Reef fishing in the Florida Keys is some of the best in the world. Yellowtail snapper and grouper make for a fine feast of fillets, as long as you stay out of protected reef areas. Flats fishing is another summertime pleasure in the Keys with tarpon running in the shallows, it’s warm but the rewards are fruitful. While the biggest thrills are out at sea with the game fish. Deep sea fishing for mahi mahi, wahoo, and if you hit it right, for the rush of a sailfish on the line hurling itself out of the sparkling surface of the ocean as you reel it in.
To cool off after the salty adventures, explore the two hundred year old Audubon House off Mallory Square for a glimpse into the life of one one of Key West’s wealthiest historic seafarers. Captain John Huling Geiger began building his mansion in 1846 in the American Classic Revival architectural style. A model of quality workmanship, the wooden frame of the House and the floors are of Dade County Pine, a now-extinct hardwood almost impervious to termites. Four generations of the Geiger family lived in the house for nearly 110 years, but in 1958 the house was slated for demolition to make way for a gas station. Mitchell Wolfson and his wife Frances stepped in, and their purchase and subsequent renovation of Audubon House sparked the restoration movement in Key West that is evident today in the city’s Historic Old Towne District. The Wolfson family continues to care for the property through the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, and it is air conditioned making it a perfect summer spot to visit.
